GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION
Regional Position
In the south east of the Département of the Ain, at the eastern edge of France, the "Bugey" lies at the centre of the triangle bounded by Lyon, Grenoble and Geneva. Lompnaz lies to the west of the Bugey, where the river Rhône flows northwards before turning west towards Lyon.
Travel to the Bugey:
By air: the Bugey is served by 2 international airports - Lyon Saint Exupéry (50 minutes away) and Geneva Cointrin (1hour 30 minutes away). For internal flights, the regional airport at Chambéry/Aix-les-Bains is 45 minutes distant.
By train, the TGV (high speed train)serves Lyon and Bourg en Bresse (both 1 hour distant) et and TER (regional express trains) can be taken to and from Ambérieu-en-Bugey (30 minutes).
By car, take one of the following motorways:
A42 Lyon - Bourg en Bresse; exit 8, Ambérieu-en-Bugey or exit 7, Pérouges
A43 Lyon - Chambéry; exit 7, L'Isle d'Abeau or St Genix
journey time 30 minutes from leaving the motorway.
A car is essential to best discover the varied sights of the region.
THE VILLAGE
Lompnaz occupies the extreme north-west of a depression in the range of hills known as the Molard de Don. The village is separated from Marchamp, in the south, by the winding river Brivaz and from Bénonces, to the north, by the Aradin. The village is ssituated beneath the escarpement of la Teilla, at the junction of the D 87 et D 94 roads.
The population of 150 live in various "quartiers" which vary in altitude from 625 to 670 metres. A number of second homes raise the summertime population and several gîtes (self-catering cottages) of high standards are available for holidaymakers.
With 85 hectares (about 200 acres) of ground under cultivation, 315 hectares (about 800 acres) of pasture and 715 hectares (about 1800 acres) of woodland - wood is still the main source of fuel for heating - Lompnaz is a farming village, with 7 active farms in 2002.
